Draper's Self Culture was published in 1907 as a multiple volume anthology of writings and lessons.
The overall tone is hopeful, frank, and progressive. Sometimes it's even downright crunchy.
This series was published so that Americans might be edified against a decline in values, morality, and intellect that was perceived by scholars and intellectuals at the turn of the Century. Though it's sometimes outdated, I think of it as a smart and well-written alternative to Chicken Soup for the ______'s soul.
I've included a handful of scans, though I wish I could put in every page. There's lots of beautiful drawings and photographs.
Musical accompaniment comes from a computer-made song that I recorded a few months back. Counterpoint?
This book, written by Jan Henry and published in 1957, captured the heart and mind of Kirsten Bauer when she discovered it a few weeks ago in the Elsewhere stacks. She even included an excerpt in her living room lecture on Catology ( http://livingroomlectures.blogspot.com/ )
This recording features Kirsten reading a short excerpt while Natasha Dastur plays tabla.
Today's reading comes from the second printing of Earth and Sky, circa 1900. The book was first printed in 1897.
The book describes itself as "A first and second grade nature reader and textbook," though it mostly eschews an academic tone, favoring poetry and metaphor. It most often describes the characters of nature as babies ad children. Musical accompaniment is provided by an a Capella choir.
It's my first foray into epic poetry. Any feedback would be much appreciated.
Here's the last song on my Smiths cover E.P.
A hard copy edition should be available soon!
My dad is really suffering with two big kidney stones.
This is a song I wrote for him to encourage a speedy recovery.
If you want to avoid kidney stones, stay hydrated.
I've taken some liberties with this'n. Unless you're my mom (no offense mom) you're probably familiar with the original.
If not, take a look at the fan video at the bottom of this entry featuring Thomas the Tank Engine and the original recording.
